Questions, answered
The things people ask before they get back on the belt.
Is 5 minutes even worth it?#
Yes. The point of 5 minutes is not the calories, it's proving to yourself you're someone who gets on. Habits are built by repetition, not intensity. Once 5 minutes is automatic, adding time is easy.
My knees hurt. Should I just skip it?#
Go slower, keep the incline flat, and try shorter sessions split across the day. Walking is low impact, and for many people it helps joints over time. If pain is sharp or keeps getting worse, see a doctor or physical therapist, they can tailor things for you.
How fast should I walk?#
Fast enough that you're breathing a bit harder, slow enough that you can still talk in full sentences. That's moderate intensity, and it's exactly the zone you want.
Should I use incline?#
Not yet. Build time first. After a few weeks of comfortable 20-30 minute walks, adding 1-3% incline is a great way to increase the work without going faster.
I missed a week. Do I start over?#
You start where you are. Go back a week in the plan if that feels right, but don't punish yourself with a bigger session to "make up." The streak resets, you don't.
Will I lose weight just by walking?#
Walking helps, especially for keeping weight off and for your overall health. Most weight loss comes from changes in eating. The combo of daily walking plus a few simple food swaps is where the magic happens.
