- Walking vs running for weight loss
Walking vs running
Running burns more per minute. Walking wins on the thing that matters most: you'll keep doing it.
Calories per minute#
Running uses roughly twice as much energy per minute as walking. Per mile, the gap is much smaller: walking a mile and running a mile burn a similar amount, the run just takes less time.
Why walking often wins#
- Much lower impact on knees, hips and feet.
- Lower injury risk, so fewer forced breaks.
- Easier to do every day, and consistency beats intensity.
- Comfortable to do while watching, listening or talking.
Weight loss is mostly food, plus movement#
Exercise helps, but most weight change comes from eating patterns. Walking's biggest benefits are for your heart, blood sugar, mood, sleep and joints, and helping keep weight off once it's lost.
If you want to run later#
Build to 30 minutes of brisk walking first, then try short jogging intervals. Ask your doctor first if you have joint, heart or other health concerns.
