Buying a used treadmill
Plenty of barely-used treadmills are for sale. Here's how to get a good one.
Before you go#
- Look up the model's maximum user weight and continuous-duty motor rating (CHP).
- Ask how often it was used and whether it's been moved.
- Measure your space, including about 2 feet behind the deck.
- Bring help: treadmills are heavy.
Test it in person#
- Walk on it for at least five minutes at your usual speed.
- Listen for grinding, squealing or thumping from the motor or rollers.
- Check the belt for fraying, and that it runs centered without slipping when you push off.
- Press on the deck: it shouldn't flex much or creak.
- Make sure the safety key is included and actually stops the belt.
- Try the incline and every button you'd use.
Red flags#
A missing safety key, a belt that slips or drifts, burning smells, error codes, or a seller who won't let you try it running. Walk away from those.
After you buy#
Check the belt tension and lubrication as the manual describes, and keep it on a mat away from walls. See the treadmill care guide.
