Walking pads, explained

A walking pad is a small, flat treadmill with no handrails. Great for some people, risky for others.

Who they suit#

People who are steady on their feet, want to walk slowly while working or watching TV, and are short on space. Most fold or slide under a sofa.

Who should be careful#

Most walking pads have no handrails, a shorter deck and lower weight limits, often around 220–265 lb, though some go higher. If you need the rails for balance, are near the weight limit, or have dizziness or joint problems, a full treadmill with rails is safer.

What to check before buying#

Using one at a desk#

Start at 1.0–1.5 mph for 10–15 minutes at a time. Typing while walking slowly is easier than it sounds; phone calls are easier still. Raise your desk to elbow height and keep the cord clear.
